Turkish General Issues Warning on Bill

advertisement

Çare about starting wars? It looks like our friends the dems in congress want Turkey to start a shooting war between them and the Iraqi Kurds. That will be the end result of passing this resolution calling what the Turks did to the Armenians a genocide. They didn't have the guts to do it in Darfur where it is happening now. They ignored it in Rwanda and Cambodia, but these idiots want to pass a resolution now about a genocide that happened almost 100 years ago. These are the people you want in power?

ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) - Turkey's top general warned that ties with the U.S., already strained by attacks from rebels hiding in Iraq, will be irreversibly damaged if Congress passes a resolution that labels the World War I-era killings of Armenians a genocide.
Turkey, which is a major cargo hub for U.S. and allied military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, has recalled its ambassador to Washington for consultations and warned that there might be a cut in the logistical support to the U.S. over the issue.

"If this resolution passed in the committee passes the House as well, our military ties with the U.S. will never be the same again," Gen. Yasar Buyukanit told the daily Milliyet newspaper.

Despite the general's strong words, it is not clear how far Turkey will go to express its dismay to Washington

Why now? Why here? Do these people want us to loose so badly in Iraq that they would do this? The vast majority of the gas that the U.S. uses in Iraq comes from Turkey. Just cutting that off would be a disaster.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I have been following this and just don't understand the timing. I don't want to accuse them of trying deliberately to sabotage the Iraq war but if Turkey closes its airspace there are major problems in Iraq,.

    I find this completely amazing.

Do you righties have Borg-like cognitive implants?

It's Bush's policy, Bush's war, Bush's @!$%# UP, it's the Turks decision to start whatever war might start and it's Kurdish national aspirations on the line.

And you right-wing nutjobs blame some Congressman from San Mateo, California?

Adding, if shooting does start, I'm rooting for the Kurds.

You need to pay attention to what the Turks are saying. How about doing some google research on the subject.

    I don't give a @!$%# what the Turks are saying, I really don't.

What they want is for American policy to benefit Turkish interests. I'm cool with that--I expect no more and no less from any nation-state.

I just think American policy should be constructed to serve American interests, not Turkish interests.

Explain to me again why the what a Turkish general wants is more important than what the Speaker of the House of Represenatives wants?

If George Bush doesn't like the Turkish genocide being recognized, he can renounce his citizenship and go be president of Turkey.

If the Turkish general is speaking on behalf of the government and they intend to invade northern Iraq, it would tend to screw things up. The vast majority of the refined petroleum products that we use in Iraq come from Turkey.

    A. Things are already screwed up.

    B. Turkey invading Northern Iraq would be Tom Lantos's fault? How about, you know, blaming TURKEY for Turkey invading northern Iraq?

There is another option. Turkey could just close its border and stop 70% of the supplies for the Iraq war.
And just why should a 100 year old incident be so urgent now?

It is inexcusable that this happen at this exact time. The dems controlled congress for 40 years and did not see fit to do this. Why now? What possible good could it do? Answer is NONE, and does a lot of bad things.

Why are you more loyal to the Turkish military than to the United States Congress?

Why do you want the Turks to get away with genocide?
